Vauxhall Motors Limited is a car company based in the UK. The company was founded in 1857 by Alexander Wilson and is headquartered in Bedfordshire, England. The company is known for manufacturing commercial vehicles, electric, and passenger cars. In 2021, it became a subsidiary of Stellantis. In the early years, the company was only manufacturing marine engines and pumps and in 1863, the company was purchased by Andrew Betts Brown.
The new owner started manufacturing travelling cranes and renamed it to “Vauxhall Iron Works”. The first car manufactured by Vauxhall was in 1903 and it was again renamed to “Vauxhall”. The company was acquired by General Motors in 1925 and in 1930, Bedford Vehicles was launched as a subsidiary of Vauxhall to manufacture commercial vehicles. Vauxhall was sold to Groupe PSA in 2017.
The word Vauxhall has historical roots to a person and a place in London. The word is derived from Fulk’s Hall which was named after a Norman mercenary Falkes de Breaute who was one of the King John’s mercenaries. He owned a manor in the medieval era. With the passage of time, the name of this person changed to Fulk’s Hall to Vauxhall and the area was known for its beautiful gardens in the 18th century. The griffin is the coat of the arms of Vauxhall area.
