Tata Sons, the principal investment holding company and promoter of Tata Companies, owns the Tata brand. Each Tata company operates independently under the guidance and supervision of its board of directors and shareholders.
One of Tata Group’s most notable subsidiaries is Tata Motors, established in 1945 as Tata Engineering and Locomotive Co. Ltd. (TELCO). The company launched its first commercial vehicle in 1954. Tata Motors is a leading global manufacturer of automobiles, producing cars, utility vehicles, buses, trucks, and defense vehicles. In 2004, Tata Motors acquired the South Korean truck manufacturer Daewoo Commercial Vehicles. In 2008, it acquired Jaguar Land Rover, which elevated Tata Motors to the status of an international automotive giant. In 2008, Tata Motors also launched the Tata Nano, which is known as the world’s cheapest car.
Many people think that Tata Automotive is the largest Tata Group company. But that’s not true; Tata Group's most prominent brand is Tata Consultancy Services.
Tata Sons owns Tata Companies now.
