The company was founded in Helsinki and it is now headquartered in Raseborg. Sisu is a subsidiary of Sisu Defense which is also an automotive manufacturing company that produces high-mobility tactical military-grade vehicles.

The company was first known as Oy Suomen Autoteollisuus Ab (SAT); this company was a joint venture between Autoteollisuus-Bilindustri and Autokoritehadas. As both companies were facing financial issues, the financing banks suggested the joint venture. Right after the birth of this venture, the company made did a good business in the country and the name Sisu was suggested by both parties in 1932.
