For three years, Nissan used a different logo in which the Nissan wordmark got a brown hue and was written in italicized fonts. The unique serif above it provides a distinct look.
1960
In 1960, the logo completely changed. They removed the background. And Nissan was written in wordmark red color. Written in handwritten font, it had sharp edges. This minimal logo gave a touch of modern brand identity. This wordmark was written on the cars in silver color which gave a sense of luxury and style.
1959
Nissan’s logo continued to evolve, shedding its previous rounded elements. The iconic red rectangle became more compact, losing its rounded corners and subtle white frame. Rounded elements were eliminated within this new logo. There is also no white frame outside the rectangle. Nissan’s letters are written in Sans Serif which shows the company’s progress.
1950
In 1950, the logo became simple again. The trapezium was replaced by a rounded rectangle. Inside this rectangle is written the word Nissan in script typeface. The word S is similar to five which gives the logo a modern look.
1940
The 1940s saw a marked change within Nissan’s logo. Now the logo consisted of a trapezium. The trapezium was red in color and the word Nissan was written in uppercase on it. And just above the Nissan word was the previous logo but only the word Nissan was moved down from the previous ones. There are many variations in the typeface. The word A is the largest while all the other letters except S are in rounded corners. While S corners are sharp.
1933
Nissan’s original logo is simple and has a lot of manning hidden inside. The red circle on the background of the wordmark represents the sun, which means that Japan is the Land of the Rising Sun. And if we look at the meaning of the word Nissan, it means giving birth to the sun. Nissan is written on a blue background which is very important for readability.
The Nissan name was first used in the 1930s for Nihon Sangyo on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. In 1933, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. became a separate company. From the 1950s to the 1980s, Nissan was mostly known as the Datsun brand. The 240Z Sports car was a famous sports car of the Datsun brand. In 1980, Nissan opened its first plant in the United States. In 1999, Nissan almost came close to bankruptcy, but its alliance with Renault saved it from bankruptcy.
