AMG was founded in 1967 under the name AMG Motorenbau- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH (AMG Engine Production and Development Limited) in English. The founders Erhard Melcher and Hans Werner Aufrecht were former engineers based in Burgstall an der Murr (near Stuttgart). The company moved to Affalterbach. By the year 1933, AMG became the biggest seller of modified and customized Mercedes Benz cars.
Daimler Benz AG and AMG signed a contract to become the extensive dealer network. Daimler Benz AG bought 51% of AMG’s shares in 1999 and this is when AMG was renamed as Mercedes AMG GmbH. On January 2005, the rest of the AMG was acquired by Mercedes. Its headquarters is in Affalterbach, Germany and its current chairman of the board is Phillip Schiemer.
