The Lada brand designed its first official logo in 1970. The company used this version from 1970 to 1974. It did not use other versions except 1970. The logo featured a silhouette resembling a boat used by Nordic cultures like the Vikings. The name “Lada” itself is the Russian term for this type of vessel.
The vessel is on a black background inside a pentagon. The Pentagon has a white border. The inscription “Tolyatti” (Тольятти) is written on the lower part of the shield. Тольятти is the city where the brand started. There was a typing error in this name as well. Instead of the Cyrillic letter “Я” (“Ya” in “Tolyatti”), the Latin “R” was mistakenly used.
Later that same year, the designers opted for a simpler design, removing the lettering and leaving just the white sailboat on the black background.

This was the company’s first logo, but it was a trial version, and the company never used it. Vladimir Antipin designed the logo. It is a vertical rectangle logo resembling a trapezoid. Inside the rectangle, the acronym “VAZ,” which stands for Volzhskiy Avtomobil’nyi Zavod, is written in black font. It is the name of the company’s plant at that time; the middle bar of the ‘A’ is very low. It is an ambiguous logo that was difficult for me to understand as well. Perhaps the company didn’t use this logo because of its ambiguity.
Lada vehicles are instantly recognizable by their boat-shaped logo. As mentioned in the introduction, LADA is a subsidiary of AvtoVAZ. AvtoVAZ initially received technical assistance from Fiat, and early Lada vehicles were marketed under the Zhiguli name. In the 1970s, AutoVaz manufactured Lada for export purposes only.
However, later in the 1990s, it became a primary brand of AutoVAZ. In 2016, Renault took control of Lada. However, in 2022, due to the Russia-Ukraine war, the Russian government acquired Lada.
Lada vehicles are affordable, and they focus on functionality and durability. That’s why they are suitable for various terrains, as Russia has a vast landscape.
It is a major car manufacturer in Russia and manufactures 800,000 vehicles annually.
In the Soviet Union era, Lada was famous in Russia and other European countries. However, when the Soviet Union ended, a lot of different car brands chose Russia as their market. That's why the Russian people had many options, and Lada became unpopular.
AutoVaz manufactures Lada vehicles. However, in the early stages of the company, it received technical assistance from Fiat.
