ERF was a truck and heavy-duty commercial vehicle manufacturing company based in the United Kingdom. It was founded by Edwin Richard Foden in 1933 and was closed in 2002. The company had headquarters in Sandbach, England. It was bought by MAN in 2000 and was again closed in 2007. Edwin was the first person to design the steam wagon with steel tyre wheels and also introduced the first pneumatic-tyres.
Edwin launched the first diesel lorry in 1933 and gave the chassis number as 63 which was his age. The company the vehicle components from different suppliers like axels from Kirkstall Forge Engineering, gearboxes from David Brown, and engines from Gardner. ERF vehicles were marketed under another automotive manufacturing company Western Star and after the 1980s recession, the company didn’t have a lot of sales.
ERF used Gardner engines.
