The company name Dacia is taken from the region in Romania. The Romanian government started UAP, the earlier name of Dacia, to manufacture affordable vehicles for the country and the European market. From the start, Renault helped UAP manufacture vehicles. In 1968, Dacia launched its first model, the Dacia 1100, which was based on the Renault 8.
Renault faced many challenges under the government’s ownership. In 1999, Renault purchased 51% of Dacia’s shares to expand its operations. Later, it acquired 99% of its shares, and now Dacia is wholly owned by Renault.
Dacia has a strong presence in European and African markets. Current models include Sandero, Logan, Duster, Jogger, Spring and others.
