Borgward was founded by Carl F. W. Borgward in 1890 in Bremen, Germany. The company used to sell 4 different car brands under its name; Lloyd, Goliath, Hansa, and Borgward. The company originated in 1905 in Varel (a small town near Bremen). The company was a merger between NAMAG (makers of Lloyd) and Hansa Automobilgesellschaft. The company merged in 1914 and was named Hansa Lloyd Werke AG.
After the war, the merged company faced a lot of monetary loss due to economic downfall, this is when the owner of Goliath-Blitzkarren Carl Borgward bought and controlled the misfortunate company. The first vehicle by the new company was called Blitzkarren (lightning car). It was a three-wheeled van that was affordable by the working class and many used this van as a means of delivering their goods.
