The current Audi Logo emerged after the last modification in 2016. In 2016, the Audi logo underwent a significant change to make the logo cleaner and simpler. Previously used three-dimensional rings turned to two-dimensional to bring a more streamlined appearance and minimal design. This new logo no longer features the wordmark. The rings’ color turned black to make them prominent, professional and concise. The objective was to make the logo simple, easy to remember, and minimalistic yet to convey the legacy of the brand. This drastic change in logo design aligned with the industry trend of flat and minimal designs.

On the 100th anniversary of the company, the company modified the logo significantly. The smooth chrome finish in combination with the large size made the logo design modern, striking and visually prominent. These drastic changes were made in an attempt to make the logo more visually striking, and prominent and to represent the technological advancement. In addition to this, the wordmark’s size was reduced and repositioned to the lower left side of the rings. This repositioning allowed the rings to take center stage and to be the focal point of the logo design.

In 1995, the company brought the emblem and wordmark together in a single cohesive symbol. The logo was divided into parts, the upper part and the lower part. The upper part of the logo featured three-dimensional rings and the lower part incorporated the wordmark “Audi” in a unique font. The wordmark placed underneath the rings was in red. This new variant of the logo represents sophistication and a sense of depth. The delicate and thin contours of the rings brought a sense of elegance and exclusiveness to the image.

Again in 1978, the company redesigned the logo to bring more contrast to the logo and make it more striking. The oval-shaped rectangle background turned to red and a thin white line and red border line were also introduced. Doubtlessly, this modification in logo design made the logo design stand prominently and brought visibility and vibrancy to the logo design.

The company redesigned the logo again during the same year 1969. This time logo featured a new oval-shaped geometry and the lettering “Audi” was incorporated into it. A unique font was used for the lettering to make it attractive and eye-catching. The word “Audi” was written in bold white letters and “d” in the letter “Audi” was featured as a rounded design. This unique approach for the letter “d” became the distinguishing feature of the Audi Logo at that time.

During the same year, the company launched a new design of the logo that retains only four rings and the horizontal rectangle was removed. This variant of the logo was simpler and cleaner. Now logo retains the four interlinked rings to represent the collaboration, trust, shared values, and history between all stakeholder companies. This new logo version didn’t include the name of the company and emphasized the four rings to be remembered as the company’s visual identity.

In 1965, Volkswagen took control of the Audi Union and brought revolutionary developments to the company. Auto Union and NSU Motorenwerke AG merged in 1969 and a new union was formed with the name “Audi NSU Auto Union AG” which became “Audi AG” in the following years. A new logo design was introduced to incorporate the “NSU” to reflect the collaboration of the two companies and their shared values and history.

Back in 1949, the logo was redesigned to make it simple yet impactful. In this version of the Audi logo, the names of all four brands were removed from the logo rings. Instead of these four names, a single phrase “Auto Union” was featured in a rectangular box. A simple sans serif font was used for lettering. Removing the brand names from the logo resulted in a cleaner, simpler and streamlined logo design.

Back in 1932, four automobile companies Audi, DKW, Wanderer and Horch collaborated and merged to form an Auto Union AG. Economic crises in 1932 forced these automobile manufacturers to form the Union. After the merger of these four companies, a new logo design was introduced to represent the unity between these brands. The ring logo has become an iconic emblem of the company that represents not only the legacy of the brand but the expertise and legacy of all four brands collaborated under this new union.
