Holden was launched in 1856 by Sir Edward Holden and James Alexander Holden and its headquarters is in Port Melbourne, Australia. James had emigrated from UK to South Australia in 1852 and started a company J.A. Holden & Co. in 1856. The company used to do saddlery business and the founder’s son Henry entered the business and managed the company efficiently.
The company was joined by H.A. Frost in 1885 and the business was renamed to Holden & Frost Ltd and provided services like car upholstery and minor repairs. The company also started various businesses like motorcycle sidecar in 1913. During the war era, the company was renamed to Holden’s Motor Body Builders Ltd in 1917. GM was introduced in Australia in 1926 and saw Holden’s success and bought more than 70% of its shares.
Due to high competition, the company couldn’t keep up and soon GM decided to end this division by 2021. While some sources suggest that a newer version of Holden will be introduced in the coming years by GM.
The first car of Holden was the Holden 48-215 model.
The Holden FX model was designed by Frank Mathwin.
The Holden V8 model was designed by Ed Silins and Fred James.
